Dr Caroline Curwen is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Durham University (UK). Her research explores musically evoked narrative imaginings in synaesthetic and non-synaesthetic expert musicians, combining approaches from music psychology, cognitive science, and phenomenology. Her work centres on perception, embodiment, and imagination, highlighting the role of individual differences in inclusive models of musical cognition.
She is Associate Editor for Psychology of Music, Consulting Editor for Musicae Scientiae, and Treasurer of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM) and has published in leading journals including Psychological Research, Consciousness and Cognition, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

When Music Paints: Colour, Emotion, and Imaginative Listening

My research is grounded in my own experience of seeing colours and shapes when I hear music—known as synaesthesia. I have a conscious and automatic response to music that plays a fundamental role in my musical sense-making. These experiences reveal how our perceptions of the world often differ from one individual to another yet can also illuminate shared patterns of emotion and narrative in listening. Building on this, I explore how music can evoke inner stories and scenes—what I call musically evoked narrative imaginings—and how these reveal the rich, imaginative ways in which we connect through sound.

Toward Integrated Musicianship: Linking Psychological Processes and Music Education

This keynote examines interdisciplinary links between psychology and music education through concepts developed in Paul Harris’s work, particularly the Simultaneous Learning framework. Harris’s approach positions musical skills—listening, performing, reading, and creating—as interconnected cognitive processes rather than discrete tasks. Drawing on this perspective, the presentation outlines how integrated pedagogical models can support more coherent skill acquisition, strengthen musical understanding, and enhance learners’ cognitive and affective engagement. The keynote will consider implications for educational practice, curriculum design, and the broader role of psychologically informed methodologies in fostering effective and transferable musicianship.

Dianna T. Kenny

University of Sydney (AU)

Dianna was Professor of Music and Professor of Psychology at The University of Sydney, Australia (2006-2019), Founding Director, Australian Centre for Applied Research in Music Performance (ACARMP) at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, (2002-2008), and Director of postgraduate research at the National Voice Centre (1999-2002). She was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from SEMPRE at its 50th Anniversary conference in 2022.  She is the author of 12 books, including The Psychology of Music Performance Anxiety (OUP, 2011), a seminal text in the field, and the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI), which has been translated into 25 languages and is the most used instrument internationally in research on music performance anxiety.

Music performance anxiety: Contested issues

In this presentation, I discuss four ongoing conceptual problems with the field of music performance anxiety (MPA). Failure to resolve these issues will prove a continuing impediment to this field of study. The first issue is the relationship between music performance anxiety and social anxiety disorder (SAD). Is MPA a SAD? If not, is it a distinct diagnosis or part of another diagnostic cluster like generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)? Is it a unitary phenomenon or does it contain subtypes? The second issue concerns the way in which we theorize anxiety generally and the roles of cognition, emotion, and physiology. To date, most conceptualizations have been cognitive in emphasis. The role of emotion has been neglected in theorizing anxiety and its treatment as has the Freudian notion of anxiety as a “danger signal.” The third issue relates to conceptual and definitional issues, that is, how music performance anxiety is defined. The fourth issue is the upsurge of positive psychology and its treatments (e.g., daily affirmations, positive self-talk, meditation, visualization, imagery) that are based on suppression or denial of emotion, in particular, emotional distress. Reliance on these forms of intervention can be unhelpful and, in some cases, damaging.
